Shirley Jackson was born in California in 1916. When her short story The Lottery was first published in the New Yorker in 1948, readers were so horrified they sent her hate mail; it has since become one of the most iconic American stories of all time. Her first novel, The Road Through the Wall, was published in the same year and was followed by Hangsaman, The Bird's Nest, The Sundial, The Haunting of Hill House and We Have Always Lived in the Castle, widely seen as her masterpiece. In addition to her dark, brilliant novels, she wrote lightly fictionalized magazine pieces about family life with her four children and her husband, the critic Stanley Edgar Hyman. Shirley Jackson died in 1965.

Leider ist das Buch gar nicht das, was ich erwartet hatte. Von Spannung kann gar keine Rede sein und die Kapitel ziehen sich durch sinnlose und oberflächliche Dialoge leider dermaßen in die Länge. Kann mich leider nicht dazu bringen, das Buch zu Ende zu lesen. Gähn.
Unknown to me until someone told me about it - and I read it without a break more or less... readable and enjoyable, but the beginning and the end did not quite make sense to me - the finale was not as dramatic as I had hoped, although she does keep you guessing to the very last page. Overall, I love the writing and "wanted more"...
From the blurb I would have expected a nice horror/ghost story, which wasn't what I got. Instead, The Haunting of Hill House provides a character study of how people behave under certain circumstances. I'll rate it 10.For my detailed review, click on the link in my bio :)
I decided to read the book after watching the Netflix series. There are only few similarities (the haunted house and the names of some of the protagonists). I found it an interesting lecture nonetheless because of the author's style, but I've read far scarier books, and the series allows to connect with the protagonists more deeply.
While this book might have been pure terror to 1950s readers, to a 2018 reader it is hardly more scary than a Tim Burton movie. Still a nice read

This book is truly a haunting read. The characters are tangibly real, and the writing is captivating. The sense of sinister foreboding that runs like a golden thread through the book kept me up at night. You don't dread annihilation, monsters or even darkness, but fear itself, which is very powerful.
Guillermo del Toro für Penguin Horror, bevor ich das Buch geliefert bekam wusste ich schon, es wird ein Highlight in meinem gut sortierten Horror-Buchregal sein. Kurz zum Inhalt ohne zu spoilern oder Google zu ersetzen, Shirley Jackson schreibt atmosphärisch, durchdacht und vielschichtig. Wer klassische Gothic Novels mag wird bestimmt nicht enttäuscht sein. Nun zur Optik: das Buchcover ist gummiert und zwischen dem matten schwarz gibt es glänzende Elemente die sich beim darüber streichen erheben, die Seitenränder sind schwarz und verlaufen leicht in die einzelnen Seiten - damit hat sich Penguin wieder einmal selbst übertroffen!
